Q: The location of manufacturing industries is influenced by many factors including:
• Raw Materials • Labour • Markets • Transport • Capital • Services • Government Policies.
Explain how any three of the factors listed above influence the location of one manufacturing industry that you have studied.
A: RUSAL Aughinish
RUSAL Aughinish is located in Aughinish Island, 28km downstream from Limerick City on the Shannon Estuary. It is an alumina refinery that extracts alumina from the resource material, bauxite. Alumina is a semi-finished product.
There are many factors which influence Aughinish's location but I am going to state three in particular.
Firstly, transport. The Shannon Estuary is a deep-water estuary with depths of 22m at low tide. This is deep enough enough to take very large ships known as bulk carriers. Since, the heavy industry, Aughinish requires sea transport, it needs to be located beside water
Secondly, the site. Aughinish Island is a very large water front site of almost 4km (squared). The site is large enough to store the waste material from the refinery.
Moreover, the source of resource material. Bauxite, a bulky resource material comes mainly from West Africa by ship. The product alumina, is re-exported. Therefore, it is vital that the refinery is on a coastal location.

Q: Name a type of warm climate you have studied and explain some of its characteristics.
A: Hot Desert Climate
Hot desert climates are generally found in very warm deserts such as the Sahara Desert, the Kalahari Desert, the Arabian Desert and the Australian Outback.
They consist of a one season climate generally. Temperatures average 30−50°C during the day but rapidly drop to as low as 5°C during the night.
Reasons for this large temperature range:
The absence of cloud cover and vegetation meant that there is a rapid loss of heat at night. Night is said to be the 'winter of the desert'.
Rainfall is very rare with an annual total of less than 100mm. This means that it frequently gets threatened by droughts. These droughts though soon be avoided by sudden downpours.
Vegetation is very little due to the shortage of moisture. It consists of cactus, date palm and Joshua trees.
Rattlesnakes, desert foxes and jack-rabbits live in these climates.

Q: A farm can be viewed as a system, involving inputs, processes and outputs.
Answer each of the following questions with reference to any mixed farm that you have studied.
(i) Name two farm inputs. (ii) Describe two processes that take place on the farm. (iii) Name two outputs from the farm and state how each may be used.
A: Pat's Farm, Co. Clare
A farm I studied was Pat's farm in Co. Clare. It is a mixed farm which specialises in sheep and cattle. It operates as a system of inputs, processes and outputs.
The inputs on this farm are:
- Buying cattle and sheep at the markets - Buying fertiliser and seeds for the farm - Paying the vet to look after the animals - Buying the machinery to maintain the farm
The daily tasks vary depending on the season but an example of some of the processes on this farm are:
- Feeding the animals - Milking the cows - Shearing the sheep - Lambing and calving in Spring - Cutting the silage
Pat's farm generates an income through the following outputs:
- Selling calves at the market - Selling milk to dairy factories - Selling lambs and cows to butchers - Selling the sheep's wool

Q: Name one feature formed by coastal erosion and explain, with the aid of a labelled diagram, how it was formed. A: Cliff1. As the waves break onto the coast, they cut a notch into the rock. When the notch gets deeper the overhanging rock collapses. 2. This process continues and coastline retreats inland. 3. The material that falls into the sea form the cliff is called a wave cut platform.

Q: Name one feature formed by coastal deposition and explain, with the aid of a labelled diagram, how it was formed. A: Tombolo1. A tombolo is a ridge of sand or shingle which connects an island to the coastline. 2. A tombolo is formed when a sand spit occurs linking an island to the coastline rather than stretching across a bay.

Q: Name one feature formed by river erosion and explain, with the aid of a labelled diagram, how it was formed. A: Waterfalls1. Waterfalls are formed when rivers flow over areas of hard and soft rock. 2. The river erodes the soft rock but cannot erode the hard rock. This creates a step which the water starts to fall over. 3. The falling water erodes deeper into the bed. The river load creates a plunge pool as it falls.

Q: Name one feature formed by river deposition and explain, with the aid of a labelled diagram, how it was formed. A: Ox-Bow Lake1. An ox-bow lake is a horseshoe shaped lake found beside a river. 2. Ox-bow lakes are formed when continued erosion and deposition created very pronounced meanders. 3. Eventually, the river cuts through the neck of the meander. Deposition then occurs which leaves the ox-bow lake separated from the river.

Q: With the aid of a labelled diagram, explain how volcanoes are formed. A: Volcanoes1. Volcanoes are mountains that have a gap in the middle as well as magma coming through it. 2. They are formed when magma reaches the surface through a vent. It may erupt violently, blasting material into the sky. 3. When magma reaches the surface, it is known as lava. Lava pours out of the crater and flows down the side of the cone. It cools and hardens. 4. Other materials may also come out during the eruption. Layers of these materials build up to form a cone-shaped mountain.

Q: Cities have different functional zones including: - The Central Business District (CBD) - Shopping areas - Industrial areas - Residential (housing) areas - Open spaces. Explain the location of any two functional zones in a city you have studied.
A: London, England
An example of a city I have studied with a various amount of functional zones is the world city, London in England. Here are many of its functional zones that can be found in the city:
Shopping area
To the west of the City of London lies the West End. This is the main shopping and entertainment district in London. Famous shopping areas such as Oxford Street are located here.
Recreational area
There are 8 royal parks in the centre of London including Hyde Park and Regent's Park. These parks provide an important recreational resource for the city. The Olympic Park, built to the eat of the city for the 2012 Olympic Games, has been redeveloped to create excellent facilities for the former run-down industrial area.

Q: Name any new town in Ireland you have studied and describe two characteristics of this town.
A: Adamstown, Co. Dublin
A new town I have studied is Adamstown, Co. Dublin. Adamstown is beside the main railway line into Heuston Station. Commuters can leave their car at home and travel in comfort to Heuston at scheduled times without the strain and delays of traffic. They can take the Luas from Heuston into Dublin's CBD. Services were built as the homes were constructed. The train station, two QBCs, primary schools and crèche facilities for working mothers were provided early on. Schools created a sense of community quickly because parents met each other before and after school and got to know each other.
