All living things need food for energy, growth and repair, movement and protection from disease. A balanced diet contains the right amount of the food types essential for healthy living. A balanced diet contains six constituents; Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. A food pyramid suggests the daily number of servings of each of the five food groups. Fats have twice the energy value of carbohydrates or proteins. Experiments;To test for starch; Add iodine to the food eg. potatoes. The food will turn blue-black in colour. To test for reducing sugar; Add some glucose in a test tube and add benedict's solution to the food. Heat gently in a water bath. The food will turn blue then orange/red. To test for proteins; Add sodium hydroxide and copper sulfate or biuret reagent. The food will turn purple in colourTo test for for fats; Squeeze food in grease-proof paper. A translucent spot will appear.
